What would happen if your computer died?
7/26/2008

It seems like everybody has a computer these days. We keep the pictures of our kids, the vacation pictures we took, or maybe even our honeymoon pictures are on the computer. We keep our personal finances, checkbook, and our taxes on that hard drive. Basically our entire lives are stored on the hard drive of a computer.

I don’t know about you but I can’t even remember the last time I backed up my computer. And I don’t mean copy it off to the external drive I bought and then delete it off the desktop drive to make more room. I mean duplicated the information. You know keep the important stuff in two places. What would happen if my computer died, started clicking, or gave me the blue screen of death? What about all the electrical storms that seem to roll through? What would happen if a power surge or lighting knocks out my hard drive? Can the information be retrieved? Is there some way to bring back the digital record of my life?

The good news is if you find yourself with a drive that has failed and needing the information retrieved, I have found the answer. Data Recovery! When I started looking into data recovery I found a ton of companies that offer the service. It seems like everyone offer’s some form of data recovery, from the local computer shop, witch I bought my computer from in the first place, to major companies that specialize in nothing but data recovery. Do I take the chance and trust just any company with my data? What would happen if that company makes it worse than it already is? Who should I trust with the information of my life?

The more I looked into the process, the more I came to realize that not every company is equal when it comes to data recovery. I quickly realized that a local computer service and repair shop could do nothing with a drive that is not recognized by the system. The next step was the low cost data recovery companies, which seem to be all over the web. Again they could not recover from a drive that does not show in BIOS. The nationally publicized data recovery companies like ADR Data Recovery, Drive Savers, and Kroll Ontrack seem to be the only ones with “clean room” capabilities that are able to recover the data no matter the failure. It doesn’t matter if I deleted the data on accident or the drive was run over by a truck, if the platters (where the data is written) are in good shape the drive can be recovered.

Now that I have found a few qualified companies to do the job the price seems to be the only issue. Data recovery, as it turns out, is not an inexpensive process. I have found that all the companies good enough to handle whatever you throw at them charge an “arm and a leg”. Luckily the people at ADR Data Recovery suggested I check and see if my renters or home owners insurance will cover the cost of data recovery. I checked and, would you believe it, my insurance company said they would cover the cost of data recovery in most circumstances. Obviously if the drive was dropped, kicked, or other wise damaged by me the insurance would not cover it. But if the drive suffered a power surge, lightning strike, mechanical failure or even a virus they would be able to cover the cost of data recovery.

After all this I have come to realize that the best thing would be to back up regularly, keeping two copies of the important information. But if you ever find yourself in a position of needing the data off a hard drive that will not respond, have hope, there are companies out there that can help. Just be sure to choose a reputable company to recover your hard drive. This way your drive is in the best hands possible, where no unnecessary chances will be taken with your data. With only your insurance deductable out of pocket the digital record of your life can be restored.
