Primary RAID Container Offline Due to Multiple Hard Drive Failures
Data Recovery Client : Software Development Company
Hard Drive Type : (17) 36GB IBM Ultrastar
OS Type : Windows 2003
Initial Problem : Multiple Hard Drive failures in a RAID 5 configuration.
Resolution: The requested files were recoverable.
Background on the RAID Data Recovery Call
A software development company who had been having intermittent problems with their RAID server determined that their primary container had gone offline. Their IT staff discovered that not just one hard drive had failed, but to their distress, two of the hard drives in the RAID array were in degraded mode. After their IT staff had tried unsuccessfully to rebuild the RAID array due to the fact multiple hard drives had failed, they chose to contact ADR Data Recovery to recover data from the drives. ADR Data Recovery sent Fed-Ex to do a same day pick-up of the hard drives at the customer's location to be returned to the lab where the emergency data recovery could begin.
The Recovery Process
When multiple hard drives fail in a RAID array the manufacturer may tell you the data from those hard drives are unrecoverable. Here ate ADR Data Recovery, we work to repair and restore each individual hard drive so that the RAID array can be properly and virtually rebuilt.
Overview of the steps involved
- In-lab assessment of usable parts.
- Swap parts from new working IBM Ultrastar hard drives to the damaged hard drives.
- Verifying stripe and parity integrity.
- Virtually rebuilding and mounting RAID volume.
- Sending the customer a file list of what can be recovered.
