Sometimes the rebuild process fails to start — even when all drives show as healthy. This is a common frustration with LSI MegaRAID controllers.
What’s Really Happening
LSI MegaRAID often defers rebuilds unless very specific conditions are met. Just because a drive is marked “Online” doesn’t mean it’s in the correct state to allow rebuild. Foreign config entries, partially synced mirrors, or logical configuration mismatches can silently block rebuild from launching.
What Not To Do
- Don’t force a rebuild manually unless the controller explicitly prompts it.
- Avoid deleting or clearing foreign configurations until reviewed.
- Don’t assume the volume is protected — it’s often in a degraded state.
When To Escalate
- If the system boots but shows inconsistent or missing volumes
- If multiple attempts to rebuild or import configs fail
- If the rebuild appears to begin, then halts or loops silently
What You Can Do
Run Jeannie Diagnostic and upload your controller config. It’ll tell you:
- If a config mismatch is blocking rebuild
- If a stale mirror or foreign drive is the cause
- Whether rebuild is even safe to initiate
